This is probably one of the most popular questions that I get so I’m happy to bring you this one because I know it’s going to save me some typing. I may have missed a couple of things but I believe I’ve covered the basics on this one so this video should give you more than enough to start with.

  1. Thanks for the hammer tip Eric, I tapped on the front passenger and the shock resonated, hit the other side and it was quieter, so I’m going to assume the top shock/strut mount, and am going to go ahead and replace both. They are hardened anyways.

Had a vibration above 10 mph. Started getting worse to the point it was resonating the dashboard and shaking the wheel. Found a loose outer tie rod end on the driver side, but replacing it did nothing for the vibration. Then got the tires balanced and rotated, again no change.

It would obviously be best to just replace the shocks/struts because they’re old, but money is a factor here, and I will likely need an $100 alignment after I’m done. Gotta get the car back on the road for now.

  2. First time finding your channel and I am impressed at how thorough you are in breaking down these noises. Another tweak to your good idea, take a 18lb sledge and have someone lightly hit the tires with the side of the sledge. That may simulate the driving a tiny bit more. Finding suspension noises is very difficult and I am here because I’m at wit’s end trying to locate loose rattle noise from the back of my 2010 Hyundai Tucson. It is driving me crazy and I ended up tearing most of the car how to try and locate the noise! I’m going to try the sledge and listen and feel technique you described next. Thanks!

  3. Thank you Eric, found the source of my suspension noise with your tip of hitting the tyre.I replaced my hooter a few weeks ago and it started to knock against my bodywork in the engine bay.Couldnt find the source until I jacked the left front wheel and smacked the tyre, and there was the noise in the engine bay, opened the hood and saw the hooter was knocking against the body whenever i smacked the tyre. Problem solved.
